French Program at Merit School: Following the Ontario Curriculum (Grade 4 to Grade 12)

At Merit School, we offer a dynamic and comprehensive French as a Second Language (FSL) program from Grade 4 through to Grade 12, fully aligned with the Ontario Curriculum.

Our program is designed to develop students' French language proficiency, foster an appreciation for French culture, and open doors to diverse opportunities in an increasingly globalized world. We believe that learning French is a valuable skill that enhances cognitive development and intercultural understanding. Our curriculum progresses systematically, ensuring a strong foundation and expanding communicative competence at every stage:

Grade 4 to Grade 8: Building Foundational French Skills

In these formative years, our program focuses on introducing students to the French language through engaging and interactive methods, building their confidence and basic communication skills.

Grade 4: Students begin their French journey by developing fundamental vocabulary and simple sentence structures. They learn to understand and respond to basic oral and written instructions and engage in simple conversations about familiar topics.

Grade 5: The focus shifts to expanding vocabulary and grammatical understanding. Students practice expressing personal information, preferences, and describing people and objects, enhancing their ability to communicate in various contexts.

Grade 6: Building on earlier skills, students increase their fluency in everyday conversations. They learn to express opinions, ask and answer questions, and comprehend short, familiar texts and audio.

Grade 7: Students deepen their French communication abilities, learning to narrate simple events, express feelings, and participate in more structured discussions. They expand their reading comprehension and writing skills for various purposes.

Grade 8: The curriculum consolidates foundational skills, enabling students to communicate more independently. They refine their ability to understand complex oral instructions, read authentic texts, and write coherent paragraphs on a range of topics.

Grade 9: Students transition to more complex grammatical structures and vocabulary. They develop skills in understanding and producing a variety of oral and written texts, focusing on expressing ideas, opinions, and information on current issues.

Grade 10: The curriculum emphasizes enhancing communicative competence in diverse situations. Students refine their listening comprehension, expand their reading strategies for authentic materials, and develop more sophisticated writing techniques for various text forms.

Grade 11: Students are introduced to advanced French structures and vocabulary. They engage with more challenging literary and informational texts, participate in in-depth discussions, and hone their ability to express complex ideas and arguments in both spoken and written French.

Grade 12: Building on prior learning, students achieve a high level of French proficiency, focusing on advanced grammar, nuanced vocabulary, and cultural understanding. They critically analyze various texts, participate in advanced conversations, and produce sophisticated written work, preparing them for university-level French studies or professional contexts.

At Merit School, our experienced French educators employ immersive and interactive teaching strategies to ensure that every student is challenged, supported, and inspired to achieve their full potential in French language acquisition and cultural appreciation
